Cart, Parade:

A cart is distinguished from a wagon by the number of wheels on which it runs.  Carts have 2 wheels (1 axel) while wagons have 4 wheels (2 axels).  On the up side, carts are more easily maneuverable.  On the down side, it is important to balance the distribution of weight over the one axle in a cart so that the cart carries the weight rather than your pet. It's not that my Newfs aren't willing to carry some weight, it's just that if I wanted them to carry all the weight in the first place, I would have simply used saddle bags, which, after all, have their place and time.

This style is sometimes referred to as a "parade cart" because it's designed to be light and easy for the dog to pull and not suitable for hauling weight or giving rides."

Cart, Working:

In contrast, a working cart is much stronger, and designed to actually haul some weight. In practice this means a working harness, traces, and poles to keep the cart from running into the dog when she stops.

Saddle Bags:

To be preciCourtesy of DogScouts.comse, these really can't be saddle bags because dog's don't wear saddles (although I've had people ask me if my Newfies ever do wear them).  Backpack is probably a better choice.

Dogs can carry a good deal of weight on their backs, which is helpful in trekking across country, as your dog can then lighten your load by carrying his own provisions at the very least.  It is important to place the weight which your dog will carry over the shoulder blade (withers) area, and not in the middle of the back.  The shoulders are built to carry the weight--the spine is not.  This is especially important in long-backed breeds.  Get a pack which places the weight over the dogs shoulders.

Theory of Mind:

"As the title of Premack and Woodruff's 1978 article "Does the chimpanzee have a theory of mind?" indicates, it is also important to ask if other animals besides humans have a genetic endowment and social environment that allows them to acquire a theory of mind in the same way that human children do. This is a contentious issue because of the problem of inferring from animal behavior the existence of thinking, of the existence of a concept of Self or Self-awareness, or of particular thoughts. Each of us knows by introspection that we have beliefs, desires and intentions and we infer by extension and by using our own self-developed Theory of Mind, that all other humans with normal minds also share this cognitive ability, and usually have thoughts and feelings which we discover in fact differ from our own. Researchers who have spent a great deal of time with non-human apes tend to accept the likelihood that other apes like chimps also have a theory of mind. For example, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh takes this position in her book "Kanzi". Others such as C. M. Heyes (see Theory of Mind in Nonhuman Primates) take the position that we need not infer that chimps in the wild have any understanding of the mental states of other chimps."

Travois:

The travois was a pre-wheel solution to carrying loads across flat territory like the American Plaines. We tend to think of a travois as being pulled by horses, but, in fact, dogs were used first.  I use it as a very simple pre-wheel drafting training tool.  Get's beginners comfortable with being hitched to something and starts sensitizing them to what it means to have something behind you that can't turn as quickly as you normally can.  I like to use a quick release so that I can end the session immediately if I choose.

Turing Test:

The Turing test is a proposal for a test of a machine's capability to perform human-like conversation. Described by Alan Turing in the 1950 paper "Computing machinery and intelligence", it proceeds as follows: a human judge engages in a natural language conversation with two other parties, one a human and the other a machine; if the judge cannot reliably tell which is which, then the machine is said to pass the test. Interestingly, Coren suggests a variation on this them in which a human and a dog play keep away. The game is video taped, the human and the dog are replaced with identical images and the edited video is played back. If the viewer can't tell the dog from the human, then the dog has passed the test.
